Obituary for Tian-shu Zhang

Our father, Tian-shu Zhang, was born on June 16, 1938 to Mr. and Mrs. Zhang Jian Chuang in small mountain village Houyang in Changle Township outside the city of Fuzhou, Fujian, China. As the only child, our father had to help the family with farming and herding cows. He was not able to attend school until 1953, when he was 15 years old. Being a smart and hardworking student, he completed elementary school in a year and a half then attended Changle No. 1 Middle/High School for six years. He graduated a top student in his class and was accepted to Fuzhou University in 1960 majoring in Applied Mathematics. Before his high school graduation, he married his life-long companion, Shu-zhen Zheng, in May 1960. After earning a Bachelor’s degree, our father was immediately hired as a teaching assistant in Fuzhou University. Soon he was promoted to be a lecturer, and later an associate professor in the university’s Mathematics Department. He continued his career there until we immigrated to the United States in 1988.
Philadelphia is where our parents have been residing in the past 32 years. We came to US with almost no money or possession. To support our higher education, he swallowed his pride and worked as a blue-collar worker in Humphrys Textile Products in West Philadelphia. He worked long hours at the factory and sometimes helped out our uncle’s Chinese takeout restaurant business afterward. With the knowledge and skills he gained as a University Professor, he became a problem solver for the factory. He optimized the cutting patterns of their fabrics to minimize fabric waste, thus saving the factory thousands of dollars. With his ability and willingness to learn, he became the factory’s most valuable operator specializing in fabrics cutting. He was highly respected by the factory owner and fellow workers alike. Our father sacrificed his own career for us to ensure we have a higher chance of success in career and life, and more importantly, to live in a free society. After retiring from Humphrys Textile Products in 2003, our father was able to enjoy his retirement life by actively participating and greatly contributed to the projects and activities organized by Fujian Houyu Association of Philadelphia.
Dad is survived by our Mom (his wife of 60 years), us three daughters -- Bi-rong, Bi-min (spouse: Bob Newby), and Bi-hang (spouse: Huy Seng), six grandchildren -- Xin He (spouse: Duo Ni Li), Sean Newby, Eli Newby, Kevin Seng, Mathew Seng, and Isabel Newby, and one great grandchild (Lavender He). We are grateful to our Dad for everything he had done for us!
