Obituary for Seng Tang 陳盛先生

Seng Tang 陳盛先生
Tang 陳盛先生, Seng Die Peacefully at Penn Hospice @ Rittenhouse in Philadelphia on May 2nd, 2019.

Seng Tang was born in 1940 to a very poor family in China who moved to Cambodia when he was 5 years old. When he was 18 years old, his father wanted him to continue running the family food cart, but he wanted to continue his education. Because he refused to take over the family business, his father asked him to leave the family home. He left home with no money, but found ways to support himself through school and eventually became a school principal. A few years after leaving the family home, his father passed. Being the eldest son of 6 children and with a strong commitment to family, he began to send money home to support his mother and siblings. When he was 23 years old, he met Huy Chang, a shy beauty, and he fell in love at first sight and married her two years later. Soon after, they gave birth to a daughter and then a son. With a growing family, he knew he needed to increase his income so together with his wife, they established multiple small businesses and he continuously strategized and thought of ways to improve and grow. With his sharp business mind and his wife’s hard work and dedication, they became successful entrepreneurs. Along the way, they had a third child, another daughter. Shortly after, in 1975, Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia and it changed everything for him. He devised plans and navigated his family through the turbulence of the Cambodian Genocide. Because of his quick wit and courageous spirit, he was able to keep his family safe despite having several near-death experiences under his belt. After successfully fleeing from Cambodia, his entire family was miraculously sponsored by a family through a church in Ohio in 1979. Soon after arriving in America, his youngest and last child, a daughter, was born. Seng Tang and his family arrived in this new, foreign country with no money and no ability to speak, read or write in English. When he expressed his desire to pave his own path in America, his American sponsors were doubtful that he would succeed. Despite these challenging beginnings, Seng Tang proved that hard work and the will to achieve can overcome language barriers and culture differences. To this day, his incredible achievements are still awe inspiring and inconceivable to his American sponsors.
Seng Tang not only achieved financial success for himself to support his family, but also shared his knowledge with his friends and community to help them find their own path to financial stability. He respected other like-minded individuals and in return, was also well respected by his friends and community. In addition to giving out business advice, a fun fact about him is that he unexpectedly became quite the matchmaker, pairing several couples who are now happily married with families of their own. Every one of these people he helped all have a sense of gratitude towards him, evidenced by the outpouring of love and support in his last days.
Seng Tang had a strong belief in the value of family. He pushed each of his children and grandchildren to strive to do better in all aspects of life, and to be kind to others. He loved and appreciated his wife as she continued to be by his side, devoted to and caring for him until the very end. In his last moments, he was surrounded by his family listening to his life story being told by his wife and son. Everyone was amazed with all that he went through and his ability to defy all odds and built an incredible legacy. There were tears shed, but there was also laughter through the tears during the funny parts of the story. Seng Tang passed near the end of the story. His family takes solace in believing that he heard his family’s laughter, knew they would all be fine, and felt that he accomplished his role in this life as a father and husband. His life had a difficult beginning, but he managed to forge his own path and was happy and proud of all that he achieved at the end. Seng Tang is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 54 years, four children and ten grandchildren.
