Obituary for 麥伟豪先生 Joey Wai Ho Mak

It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Joey Mak. He was a kindhearted
person and will be deeply missed by many. Joey’s death was sudden and unexpected. Some
people have asked how they can donate. A GoFundMe (https://gofund.me/fdec9b09) has been
created in memory of Joey. Money will go directly to a trust for his daughter, Layla Mak.

Joey Mak, age 37, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday,
December 18, 2021. He is survived by his grandmother, Poon Yow King, parents Shek Cham
Mak and Lai Hing Au, daughter Layla Mak, siblings Lisa Mak and Elaine Galarza, brother-in-law
Francisco Galarza, as well as his aunts, nephews, nieces, uncles, and cousins. While Joey’s
family loves him dearly, we take solace in knowing he rests in eternal peace.

Joey was born December 17, 1984 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and grew up in South
Philadelphia. He was the middle of three children. In his early childhood, he attended Holy
Redeemer elementary school in Chinatown. He graduated from West Catholic High School in
2002 and attended Penn State University thereafter. He moved to Northeast Philadelphia in
2009.

On August 20, 2009, Layla was born to Joey and Holly Moeung. Layla was undisputedly Joey’s
greatest joy. His special name for Layla was “Boo Boo”. He loved her more than anything or
anyone, and he showed it. Not only was Joey amazing at doing all the typical father-daughter
things like taking Layla to the park and spending time with her, he also provided a deep and
unconditional love and support in all aspects of Layla’s life. “He’d be there every morning
waiting for me to wake up,” Layla said, is one of the many memories she will cherish for the rest
of her life. Joey and Layla developed an unbreakable bond, a bond that will live on forever in
Layla’s heart.

Joey and his mother, Lai Hing Au, were extremely close. He was the rock in her life. As a child,
Joey’s love for his mother was unconditional. They were as close as a mother and son could be.
While it wasn’t always said, his love for his mother never faded as time passed.

Even through life’s challenges, Joey was a good person who genuinely cared about the wellbeing
of others. He was humble and selfless. He treated everyone with respect regardless of
the person’s current situation. Any time Joey came across an individual he could help, he would
selflessly do so. He particularly cared about helping people who were in difficult situations. Joey
was the type of person who wouldn’t turn his back to someone in need.

Joey loved animals. Ever since he was a child, he brought home many different animals to care
for: dogs, cats, turtles, rabbits, fish, hamsters, chickens, and guinea pigs. When he was 10 years
old, he bought live rabbits and a turtle from the local slaughter house, so they wouldn’t end up
on someone’s plate. He literally wouldn’t hurt a mouse. The one time there was a mouse in his
house, he humanely captured it and released it in a nearby park.

Joey was an easy person to get along with. He developed and maintained many close
friendships. Whether cooking and eating at weekend gatherings, having a good card game, or
anything in between, Joey valued spending time with his friends.

In Joey’s spare time, he enjoyed fixing things, dancing, and cooking. He enjoyed working on
projects around his house and working on his cars. Joey generously offered his time and talents
in helping his family and friends on their projects also, nothing was ever too big or too small.
While joey wasn’t the best dancer, it did not stop him from letting loose and having a great
time on the dancefloor. Joey was a fantastic cook. According to his mother, he was the best
cook in the world.
