Dr. Linyee Shum, Ph.D., (岑煉兒) passed away unexpectedly at the age of 71 on August 13, 2022 at Christiana Hospital as a result of a devastating ruptured brain aneurysm.
Linyee was born in Canton (Guangzhou) China, emigrated to Hong Kong, then to New York City, in 1972. For the last 32 years, he has lived in Elkton, MD.
He was predeceased by his father, Shing Yeung Shum (February, 1992) and mother, Sum Ying Kwan Shum (May, 2019). He is survived by his beloved family – wife Daphen Shum, daughter Katrina Gould, her husband Russell, son Derek Shum, his wife Seline, and granddaughters, Ellie and Josie Gould. He is also survived by his loving siblings – sister MeiYee Tang, her husband Chiu, sister Wendy Lee, her husband Sai, brother Kee Yee Shum, his wife Li, brother John Shum, his wife Jean and sister Jamie Tsang. In addition, the extended family includes many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
He graduated from SUNY at Buffalo, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Pharmaceutics / Pharmacokinetics. He had a successful career as a Pharmaceutical Research Scientist and also as the President / Chief Scientific Officer of his own pharmaceutical research company. He retired just 1 year ago in 2021.
Many have described Linyee as adventurous and lived life to the fullest! He had a lifetime interest in photography, including developing photos in the dark room! His adventures included skiing/snowboarding, camping, four wheeling with the Jeep, and sailing. He has even piloted small planes. On the water, he has sailed through the locks of the Panama Canal and voyaged across the Atlantic & Pacific. His next adventure included building a cargo van to go far, almost living off the grid, with his wife to places like Alaska through Canada to Nova Scotia. It was part of his dream to customize his Jeep and trailer to take to Moab as well.
The family will receive friends and visitors on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at 9:00am - 11:00am at Choi Funeral Home at 247 North 12th Street, Philadelphia, PA. The funeral service will take place at 11am, followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 333 W. County Line Rd, Huntingdon Valley, PA.
